‘Chance Procedures’ is a vast series of portraiture subjects taken on London Buses with a concealed camera. The series questions the nature of private and public space and the notion of chance within photography.

Her serie ‘Domestic Totems’, starts with the discarded object. As selected by a raven or rag picker, she collects those new gems and brings them to life in the (safe) domain of the studio. Stripped even more from any context apart from the photographic set and its art historical connotation to the still life, this is where the game and art of Bricolage is being played, new classifications built and the perception of objects stretched.

Eva Roovers’ Biography:

Eva Roovers (1981 Amsterdam NL) received her MFA Fine Art in Netherlands 2005. The following years have produced two solo shows, an international artist in residence placement and many group shows including art fairs and at galleries in New York, Amsterdam and Seoul.

Eva has now been based in the UK for one year and is half way through the MA Photography at London College of Communication, which she is studying part-time while also furthering her career working in a fine art context and starting collaborations with magazines on commercial projects.

The series ‘Grace Be Said At The Supermarket’ questions what it means to be an individual despite the wearing of a branded uniform and explores the highly personal negotiation between identity and representation.

Jo Phipps’ Biography:

Jo’s work is predominately with portraiture and in researching the subject/photographer dynamic.

Jo Phipps recently completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Photography at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design 2011 and will begin the M.A. Fine Art Photography at L.C.C. in 2012.

Jo’s first series ‘Chance Procedures’ was selected for the Photofusion AMPS/10 Exhibition in Dec 2010 and in May 2011 the first two hand-bound volumes of original prints were published. ‘Joseph’ from ‘Grace Be Said At The Supermarket’ was exhibited at the Foto8 Summer Show from July to August 2011.

Myka Baum

Myka Baum works predominantly in photography and investigates its ephemeral nature in relation to the environment.

A major and ongoing subject of Myka’s work to date has been the moon, featuring images of the moon that tremble between a synthetic construction and natural phenomena.

Myka’s more recent projects ‘ Rotten’, ‘Living Roofs’ and ‘Catch Me If You Can’ explore the subject of edible gardening in urban spaces through use of alternative mixed processes.

When encountering Myka’s work the painstaking process is to an extent out of sight – the viewer is left with essentially an abstract image, leaving you to unravel the layers of natural and mechanical reproduction.

Myka Baum’s Biography:

Myka lives and works in London. She completed postgraduate studies in Photography at Central Saint Martins in 2008 and followed on to be selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2009. Her selected work of moon reflections is on long term display at The Arts Council and prompted Wolfgang Tilmans to comment ‘It’s a very specific vision…it’s definitely something I have never seen before and it’s an achievement .’ Myka has been exhibiting UK wide and is achieving a steady volume in print sales.

Paula Gortázar

Common Space depicts the interiors of the European Parliament, an institution which, despite being little understood or liked by many citizens, is gaining a prominent role in legislating our everyday European living circumstances. In its corridors, offices and meeting rooms, these quasi-futuristic spaces reveal a dream created in the fifties; a future whose ideals have been recently put into question after the serious economic recession suffered across the continent.

According to Stefanie Braun, Senior Curator at The Photographers’ Gallery in London: “Gortázar’s photographs of the European Parliament offer an insight into the interior of an institution that is a remote yet intrinsic part of our lives. In these futuristic as well as ‘common’ looking spaces, there is little trace of the human within the minimalist aesthetic. Despite this, everyday markers of use, a crack in the wall, a fire alarm, an unplugged security scanner, remind us of the banal realities of everyday bureaucracy.”

Paula Gortázar’s Biography:

Paula Gortázar is a Spanish photographer based in London. From 2002 to 2009 she received individual photography training with Rafael Sanz Lobato (Spanish National Fine Art Award 2004). In 2010 she obtained a Postgraduate Degree in Photography from Central Saint Martins College of Art and has recently completed a Master of Arts at the University of Westminster in London. Paula also holds a Law Degree that has influenced her photographic practice by allowing her to better understand current social and political issues. In 2008 she leaded the Photography Course at Universidad de Comillas in Madrid and has been an invited lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited in Spain and the U.K. and published in different international media. She has been recently shortlisted for the Julian Margaret Cameron Photography Award.

David Calverley-Morris

My work explores the sometimes paradoxical relationship between the real and the represented, evoking the uncanny potential that emerges from the tension between actual subjects and locations and photographic interventions. The series Dark Star and Solaris recompose contemporary architecture into scenes reminiscent of science fiction films. Sites and subjects are both temporarily and permanently altered in the act of recording. This play between the actual and the represented invokes a perceptual state of flux.

David Calverley-Morris is an artist and photographer who currently lives and works in London. He studied fine art and photography at Central Saint Martins, and will begin the MA Photography at London College of Communications in 2012.

Luz Marina Trellez

“Untitled (A friend of a friend)” is a portrait series that shows seven people connected to the Internet through an online social network site such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, MySpace, Orkut or YouTube. It talks about friendship, identity, people between people, and online social network systems. It highlights issues of privacy, intimacy and mobility, real and virtual space, temporality and stillness.

Luz Marina Trellez’s Biography:

Born in Bogota, Colombian-Spanish Luz Marina Trellez, studied a BA in Fine Art at the Universidad de Bogota Jorge Tadeo Lozano (1998) an MA in Digital Arts in the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona (2003), and recently finished a Posgraduate degree in Photography at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, London (2010). She has given lectures on Photography at the Universidad de Bogota Jorge Tadeo Lozano and has shown her work in Colombia, Spain and the UK.

Paul Vickery

My practice is concerned with Western culture’s obsession with image, identity and the contradictory nature of the human condition. For my project Past Imperfect Future Tense I chose to focus on people who desire to be visible but are often viewed as outsiders in ‘normal’ society. By pushing the boundaries of my photographic practice I have attempted to reveal the many layers of complex characters and have produced something more intimate, effectively removing the ‘masks’ of my subjects.

A free flowing, visual narrative allows ambiguity to become part of my work: the narrative is confusing and contradictory - a mirror to the lives of my subjects. Past Imperfect Future Tense calls into question the very notion of ‘normality’ and raises important issues about how society views different groups of people. A metaphor for the complexities of modern living, (in the 21^st century most of us seem too busy or reluctant to question the so-called ‘normal’ worlds we inhabit) my work highlights that coming to terms with confusion and contradiction are perhaps the final things we have to deal with as human beings.

Paul Vickery’s Biography:

I was born, live and work in London.

In 2008 I studied under the tuition of Mary Ellen Mark and Joseph Rodriguez at the School of the International Center of Photography, New York, USA and in 2009 I completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Studies (Photography) at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design.

I have had solo shows in Budapest, London and New York and my work has featured on the BBC News website as well as published in a range of magazines (both web and print) including:125 Magazine, Edwin Europe (Ed Zine), Freestyle Magazine, GUP, Jocks and Nerds, Professional Photographer, The RPS Journal and Sang Bleu.

For the Index7 Group Show at Protein I will be showing three images from the series Past Imperfect Future Tense. http://www.paulvickeryphotography.com/Opening on 6^th Oct I also have a solo show at Bayeux 78 Newman Street, London W1, where I will be showcasing new work from my Transition Project.

18 Hewett Street is Protein’s own project space/ gallery that is carefully curated to showcase some of the talent they meet, work with or love. As an evolving concept space, it plays host to a plethora of exhibitions, gigs, supperclubs, forums and workshops alongside a retail space with hard to find objects and a unique coffee bar concept. The gallery will be part of the Photomonth East London International Photography festival 2011 as it host’s the first Index7 photography exhibition.

The Central St Martins’ postgraduate certificate in photography provided a platform for an eclectic mix of emerging photographic talent. Following the final show of the course in June 2011, seven recent alumni have come together to celebrate its contribution to the London art scene and to their practice.

The themes traversed in the exhibition include quasi-futuristic spaces, identity and representation, stillness and connectedness, fashion and the object, and the ephemeral nature of photography in relation to the environment. These are approached through an equally diverse range of photographic processes, from large format to digital and from pinhole to the physical use of film itself as matter.
